Disinfection Byproduct
Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) in your water
Health effects
HAA5 are a second group of chlorine disinfection byproducts formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter in water. Long-term exposure is associated with increased cancer risk and possible developmental effects. They commonly occur together with trihalomethanes.
The guideline vs. the legal limit
The federal legal limit is the maximum allowed by law. The EWG health guideline is what independent scientists consider safe — it is often far stricter.
